How to wash off waterproof makeup

We put on a lot of beauty products that are designed to resist smudging. These sweat-proof, water-proof, budge-proof products (from foundation to mascara to sunblock) are built to last, but it poses the problem. How do you wash it off at the end of the day?

Here are some beauty tips on how to clean waterproof (or any of those stay-put makeup) off your face, so you don’t have any dirt or grime to clog your pores and cause acne.

Wash your face twice

These types of products won’t come off with just one wash. After all, they’re built to last! So wash your face more than once. For example, use a regular cleanser, and in a circular motion, gently massage into your face. This helps dislodge the makeup. Rinse it off and then do it again. (Note: it’s very important to rinse off all traces of skin cleanser, to prevent skin irritation and itchiness.)

Use an oil-based makeup remover

Oil-based makeup cleansers are designed to break down even water-proof makeup. Some cleansers also have skin vitamins, and are designed for anti-aging, dry skim, etc. Shu uemura is a good choice. Check out other favorites of beauty bloggers, such as these.

There’s one good makeup remover in every price range. Clinique’s “Take the Day Off Makeup Remover for Lids, Lashes and Lips” is great for people with sensitive skin, since Clinique is known for being non-comodogenic and hypoallergenic (it doesn’t clog pores and it’s gentle on skin). However, it is pricey. If you don’t have skin problems (lucky you!) you can try “ L’Oreal’s Dermo Expertise Gentle Lip and Eye Makeup Remover” or even Vaseline, Pond’s Cold Cream or baby oil. But it really depends on your skin type, and skin needs.

And before you buy a big bottle of any product, whether it be makeup remover or any cream, get a sample or buy the smallest tube you can find. You never know if your skin will react to it or even if you like the way it feels on your face (some makeup removers can get greasy) so this saves you tons of products on something you’ll eventually throw away.

Steam it off

The most budge-proof makeup will disintegrate if you take a very hot shower . The water, combined with the steam, will clean everything. You’ll see the mascara dripping down your face!

Do remember, though, that steaming dries out the face really fast, and dry face is more prone to wrinkles. So don’t do this except when you’re wearing a lot of thick, heavy-duty makeup.

Don’t forget…

Always moisturize, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! All the makeup remover will strip off both the makeup and your skin’s natural oils. So after using makeup remover, apply your favorite facial creams. Dry skin is more prone to wrinkles and other signs of aging, so this final step is crucial.
