When travelling abroad, your eating budget can be extremely low and a lot of your meals could end up being cooked in a poorly equipped hostel kitchen and in a lot of minds, that is just not on. When in Rome, you don’t want to eat food you cook yourself, you want to eat the food that Italy is famous for.
There are some things that you need to remember when travelling abroad, in many cases the idea that you don’t want to be eating cheap, nasty food . You have still got to make sure that you get the nutrition you need when travelling abroad!
Street food can come with risks, but it also can be some of the most inspirational food available on your travels.
A lot of the time you will be walking around, making sure that you see everything there is too see in the country that you are in but that doesn’t mean that you stomach forgets about eating. Of course it doesn’t and you know that food can be expensive if you don’t know how to work everything around with your money.
You can also check out street vendors – often they are a cheap source of food and taste fantastic. Of course they are but the amount of walking you could be doing in your given country could make it all the more worth it if you know you will enjoy it while you eat it.
You also want to make sure that you have water with you at all times and buying bottled water every time you need a refill can get expensive. So if the country you are in has clean tap water, make sure to refill your water using the tap water in the hostel!
When travelling and eating out, there is sometimes some bad food and some bad places to get said food, so one important thing is to see if you can make a friend out of a local. They could point you to a restaurant with lower priced food that tastes decent and doesn’t break your budget.
You can also dine with them and split a cheque, which is sometimes cheaper if you were to just dine alone. Sometimes friendly locals will even invite you into their home for a meal in return for a small contribution, allowing you to see the real cooking of the area.
With all of these things, you should be able to be able to keep yourself hydrated, keep up with your nutrition and allow yourself to sight see as much as you can. Whether that be on a bowl of soup and a plate of bread (which can be very filling in a lot of cases) or a nice meal and a glass of wine.
There are many options out there for you to eat out on a budget, and still experience the cuisine of a foreign culture.
